Featured Dish: Jaipuri Samosa
August 25, 2020 In Dining

Updated April 20, 2021

The diverse cuisine of India offers up an incredible plethora of dishes and flavors, but there are a few foods that the country has truly become famous for. One of these signature dishes is the samosa, a savory pastry that can contain a delicious variety of fillings.

What is Samosa?

With culinary roots that tie it back to the Indian subcontinent as well as Africa, the Mediterranean, and Western and Southeast Asia, the samosa is a pastry that originated in medieval times. Because emigration helped cultural and culinary traditions spread across the region, the samosa has taken on a number of forms, flavors, and shapes.

Usually fried or baked, the samosa is a pastry that’s filled with savory elements such as beef, cheese, seasoned potatoes, onions, peas, lentils, and other meats. Depending on where it’s being served, the samosa might be made in a cone, triangular, or half-moon shape. One of its most popular forms comes from India, where it’s typically served alongside a chutney for dipping or topping. A samosa can be enjoyed as an appetizer, a snack, or even an entrée.

The Story of the Indian Samosa

One of the most widely-known versions of the samosa is the one that hails from India, often made from a type of flour that’s regionally recognized as “maida.” There are both vegetarian and non-vegetarian samosas, and Indian samosas can be either sweet or savory. Fried until golden and served warm, Indian samosas are a culinary classic.

In certain parts of India, the samosa is extra-large and stuffed with anything from green chilies and masala potatoes to dried fruit. Other regions of the country have created smaller versions of the samosas, preserving traditional elements such as flaky crust and flavorful filling. Today, samosas are a staple on the menus of countless Indian restaurants across the globe, including right here in Colorado at Little India of Denver.

Jaipuri Samosa: A Medley of Indian Flavors

At Little India, our menu features two different varieties of samosas. One is inspired by the Punjabi state in Northern India, while the other embodies flavors from the city of Jaipur.

The Jaipuri samosa is counted among our guests’ favorite Indian appetizers, making for a delicious beginning to any of our vegetarian entrees. Each of the mini samosas is filled with a generous amount of vegetarian elements, creating a tasty harmony of flavors. Served on a platter with a tangy yogurt chutney, our Jaipuri samosas appetizer is perfect for sharing with your friends or family.
