Guide to Gluten-Free & Gluten-Containing Indian Food
December 14, 2022 In Dining

Some people may react negatively to gluten, although it is not necessarily bad. Those with celiac disease can’t consume gluten, even in the smallest amounts. It is the reason many people try to avoid it at all costs. They prefer gluten-free meals.

Avoiding gluten may sound like a nightmare. Wouldn’t that make food boring?

Well, there is a wide range and diverse food that don’t contain gluten. Below, we will discuss Indian food and Indian dishes that don’t contain gluten.

Does Indian Food Contain Gluten?

It’s a common misconception that Indian food is gluten-free. Although, this is not always the case. Several Indian dishes contain gluten, while many traditional Indian dishes are naturally gluten-free.

What is Gluten?

Even a small amount of gluten can cause severe problems for people with gluten intolerance and celiac disease. It is a protein found in rye, wheat, and barley. It gives bread its chewy texture. Also, it uses as a binding agent in many processed foods.

So, does Indian food contain gluten?

The answer is yes and no—it depends on the ingredients and dish preparation.

What Indian Food Does Not Contain Gluten?

Indian cuisine offers many gluten-free options for celiac or gluten-sensitive people. Following are some of the most famous gluten-free Indian dishes:

Sambar

Traditionally, it serves with rice and a heart stew prepared with vegetables, spices, and tamarind.

Paneer

It is a type of fresh cheese that is famous in Indian cuisine.

Pongal

It is a South Indian dish with spices, rice, and mung beans. It can serve as a main dish or as a side.

Chicken Tikka Masala

It is a popular dish with spices, marinated chicken, and yogurt.

Chapati

Chapati is gluten-free traditionally. This type of flatbread is made for dipping in different sauces.

What Indian Food Contains Gluten?

You are not completely safe eating Indian food if you want to avoid gluten in your meals. It can be complicated to determine which dishes will specifically contain gluten. Here are some of the things or elements to look out for:

Spices

Although spices are naturally gluten-free, some restaurants and stores may use them to prevent clumping. It might be best to tell the restaurant staff that you can’t do anything with gluten.

Fried Food

People mostly reuse oils or pans they fry in when making fried food. Although the food may not contain gluten, it could touch items containing gluten.

Naan

It often makes with wheat flour. It isn’t easy to find a gluten-free version. If you can’t consume gluten, it is best to stay clear of the Naam while eating at an Indian restaurant.

Conclusion

We know Indian food is diverse. It can contain or not contain gluten. So, it depends on the dish and the restaurant itself. It is always best to talk to the restaurant staff and be clear about what you need if you are avoiding gluten for either personal preference or health reasons. They can give you the best option this way. So you can enjoy diverse dishes without putting yourself at risk.
